Hello, and welcome to Ask:Richard, a publication with original reports on consumer tech — from gadgets of all kinds down to the silicon, as well as promising startups in this field.

A little about myself: My name is Richard Lai and I’m based in Hong Kong. I was formerly with Engadget, and I’ve since been freelancing as a video producer, video host, writer, translator, and PR in the tech and F&B fields. I continue to serve as a judge for GSMA’s Global Mobile Awards (MWC Barcelona) and Asia Mobile Awards (MWC Shanghai), as well as an assessor for Hong Kong’s ICT Startup Award.

Having spent 14+ years largely covering Asian brands and local happenings for Engadget, my existing — and seemingly still growing — connections now give me more access than ever in some aspects. I would love to share my fresh perspective on all things tech by way of this site. Of course, there’s no stopping me from revisiting some classic gadgets, too.

You may be wondering: why ”Ask:Richard?” Well, if you’re reading this blog, you’re likely considered the “tech guru” within your family and friend circles, so naturally, everyone asks you for tech advice. I can totally relate to that, and picking this name reminds me of what got me into tech media in the first place.

As I embark on this journey, your support will be of tremendous help. I will be regularly publishing fresh content, with at least one deep dive piece — be it an early hands-on, review, comparison or general thought piece — on a weekly basis. Paid subscribers will be able to unlock my long formats and learn about some brand new products well in advance.

I’d like to thank Sam Byford for encouraging me to give this platform a try. Please do consider also subscribing to his excellent publication, Multicore. You won’t regret it.

Meanwhile, feel free to follow me on Instagram, Threads, Twitter (I’m never calling it “X”) and Facebook for more fun stuff. Those are where I also post about food, drinks and karaoke.
