Xiaomi’s SU7 Ultra is apparently the world’s fastest four-door car
Of course Xiaomi wasn’t gonna just talk about foldable phones today. As its “one more thing,” the company announced the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra concept car, which is the first to utilize the HyperEngine V8s. This is now the most powerful — and mean-looking — Xiaomi electric car, after the SU7 Max powered by the HyperEngine V6s.
You won’t be able to buy one, as Xiaomi is only using this prototype for research purposes. Specifically, it’s set to challenge the Nürburgring Nordschleife lap times for non-series cars this coming October, ahead of another challenge there with a production model in 2025.
In fact, the SU7 Ultra has not just one, but two V8s engines, along with a V6s. This trio gives the EV a total horsepower of 1,548PS, beating the Bugatti Chiron’s 1,500PS, the McLaren Speedtail’s 1,070PS and the LaFerrari’s 963PS. These are powered by CATL’s new Qilin II battery pack, which offers up to 1,330kW of power output and 897V peak voltage.
This car is also made out of lightweight carbon fiber external body parts, which is necessary given the extra panels and rear spoiler — all for producing a downforce of up to 2,145kg. As a result, this prototype only weighs 1,900kg, which is apparently lighter than the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach Package (2,234kg).
Xiaomi claims that the SU7 Ultra is the world’s fastest four-door car. Here are the figures:
0-100km/h: 1.97s (SU7 Max is 2.78s)
0-200km/h: 5.96s
0-300km/h: 15.07s
Top speed: over 350km/h
For 0-100km/h acceleration, the closest matches with four doors appear to be the Lucid Air Sapphire (2s) and the Tesla Model S Plaid (2.1s). Likewise with their top speeds — 330km/h and 322km/h, respectively.
The SU7 Ultra is equipped with AP Racing brakes, which can handle temperatures of over 800°C. A rapid deceleration from 100km/h to 0 can be achieved within 25m.
As interesting as this prototype car is, I was more surprised by the fact that Xiaomi co-founder and CEO Lei Jun personally started driving all sorts of cars while researching for the SU7. Then he showed us videos of him taking part in casual races, followed by a professionally shot footage of him drifting and doing donuts in an SU7. Mad respect for that.
Hopefully we’ll hear some good news from Xiaomi’s car team come October.
